It’s been so hard to sit on this news not only because I have a big mouth, but because when I am excited about something cool, feminist and empowering, I want to shout it from the rooftops. So here goes…I am doing my first Substack Live with the one and only, Jill Filipovic! It’s going to be next month on Monday, July 13th at 9:15am EST so mark your calendars now!
Who is Jill Filipovic? Well, unless you live under a rock, she is an American author and attorney who wrote the books, OK Boomer, Let’s Talk: How My Generation Got Left Behind and The H-Spot: The Feminist Pursuit of Happiness. She was a weekly columnist for CNN, a contributing opinion writer to The New York Times and a former columnist for The Guardian.
Jill also writes the brilliant feminist Substack newsletter, Throughline by Jill Filipovic, which I highly recommend you all check out and subscribe to. Did I mention that she also hosts amazing writing retreats from Greece to Kenya to Vietnam? I will make it to one of them! It is one of my life goals.
I’ve been a huge fan of Jill’s work since Day One and it’s always an incredible honor when I reach out to her for guidance, publications to pitch to, or have her read over my book proposal. She blurbed my book, was a fellow CNN columnist when I was, and is just the most incredible reporter who has covered human rights and women’s health issues from more than a dozen countries, and a columnist who often writes on US politics and international affairs.
Jill’s stories look at everything from why women raped in conflict can’t access safe abortions; what makes Niger the country with the highest birth rate on earth; the globalization of America’s abortion wars; whether women should self-induce their own abortions; how US foreign policy and pro-life politicians squelch free speech in in the developing world; how violence against women coupled with restrictions on abortion and contraception drive migration from Central America; and many others topics.
Which brings me back to mine and Jill’s upcoming Substack Live. What do you want to see us talk about? I want the larger umbrella of topics to be the state of women’s rights in America, but what do you want to see us bring up in our conversation? Let me know below in comments!
