Isn’t it incredible that women and birthing people menstruate for almost four decades but we remain so uninformed about it? Along with blood pressure, body temperature, heart rate, and respiratory rate, our menstrual cycle is also a vital sign.
I’m so grateful for National Menopause Foundation and Perry for making September Perimenopause Awareness Month!
Even as someone who lives, breathes, and writes all things women’s health, my own education of this stage of my life is recent. Like too many women, I only just learned that the road to menopause can be a 7-10yr journey for some women, wrought with crippling anxiety, heart palpitations, depression, hair loss and more.
Despite the profound impact perimenopause can have on a woman and their emotional well-being, it remains a topic shrouded in stigma and misinformation.
I am so happy women are finally and freely talking, and experts are studying it! We need more research and an end to the stigma. I cannot imagine the countless women who silently questioned their sanity, were medically gaslit or just suffered, and died, in silence.
Today, with an estimated 1 billion women expected to experience perimenopause by 2025, raising awareness is more critical than ever.
Perimenopause Awareness Month is not just about education; it’s about empowering women to understand their bodies and advocate for their health.
This month, women are encouraged to share their stories, seek reliable information, and connect with others going through similar experiences. By doing so, we can collectively reduce the stigma surrounding perimenopause and improve health outcomes for women everywhere.
And that will bring us one HUGE step to closing #ThePainGap in women’s health 👩🏽⚕️❤️.
