Calling all my people of color! And people in general.
This week on the #PainGapPodcast, we’re joined by Dr. Ammara Khalid about the critical need to decolonize mental health practices. Dr. Khalid emphasizes integrating traditional wisdom with modern therapy, acknowledging the deep impact of colonization on generations.
She advocates for mental health approaches that honor cultural and ancestral roots, offering a more compassionate, inclusive path to healing. Through her expertise, she highlights the importance of community and resilience in mental well-being, encouraging a shift from solely Western-centric practices to a more holistic and globally-aware perspective on mental health.
When it comes to therapy and talking about the past, we know South Asians, as with many communities of color and immigrant families, struggle to heal or even speak about our trauma. Or even acknowledge it exists.
But generational cycles of pain and trauma are real. How can we even move on from our past if we cannot even tell the truth about it?
